Pahari African Restaurant in Salt River takes its name from the Shona word for 'a place of pots', built around traditional African cooking methods using clay pots over an open fire. The kitchen aims to recreate recipes that have otherwise disappeared with time, as the skills to make them passed with the elders who once held them.
The restaurant's signature dish is based on sadza, also known as pap, made from maize and sometimes supplemented with rapoko finger millet or brown rice. Sadza is served with a choice of relishes, including beef stew, ox trotters, tripe with offal, free-range chicken and the Zimbabwean delicacy of Mopane worms, alongside green vegetables served fried or in peanut butter.
The restaurant also runs cooking classes and offers gift vouchers. It suits diners who want an authentic African dining experience built around traditional pot-cooked dishes, available for delivery as well as sit-down meals.
