Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound lanes closed for urgent repairs near Bonteheuwel
Two of the four southbound lanes between Bofors Circle and the N2 are shut for repairs after illegal digging under Bonteheuwel Bridge, and the City urges drivers to avoid the road.
The City of Cape Town is carrying out urgent repairs on southbound Jakes Gerwel Drive near Bonteheuwel, between Bofors Circle and the N2. According to the City, sand was dug out from beneath Bonteheuwel Bridge by people it suspects are sleeping there, and the roadway above was damaged as a result. It became aware of the problem on Friday evening, 23 October.
Its Roads Infrastructure Management department has been on site since the weekend. Only two of the four southbound lanes are open, and the two right-hand lanes will stay closed until the repairs are complete. Reports differ on exactly when those lanes closed and on how long the work will last, so motorists should check for updates from the City.
Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas has asked drivers to avoid this stretch of Jakes Gerwel Drive where possible, particularly on Monday, 26 October, and to use alternative routes. Delays and congestion are expected, so motorists who must use the road should slow down near the damaged sections and allow extra travel time.
Anyone who spots digging beneath a bridge is asked to tell the City call centre.
