District Six Museum is a heritage museum on Buitenkant Street documenting the history of District Six and the forced removals that emptied the neighbourhood under apartheid. It was launched in 1994 following years of work by the District Six Museum Foundation, and today runs exhibitions, oral history projects and educational programmes alongside its core heritage work.
Visitors can explore on a self-guided basis or pre-book a tour led by a former resident of the area, giving a first-hand account of the community's history, and the museum also runs school programmes and site walks as part of its public education work. It is on Buitenkant Street in Cape Town. It suits tourists, researchers, school groups and anyone wanting to hear District Six's history from people who lived it.
