Newlands Brewery, dating back to 1820, is the oldest operating brewery in South Africa and runs a guided Beer Experience tour of its site in Newlands. The roughly hour-long tour covers the brewery's history, its approach to sustainability, and a walk through the brewing process across the brewhouse, fermentation, packaging and warehouse areas.
The tour also takes in the on-site Newlands Spring Brewing Company, a specialty brewery, and ends with a tasting and a drink or two in the brewery's historic pub. Tours run Tuesday to Friday at midday and on Saturdays at 10am and midday, with a maximum group size of 20 people, and pre-booking is required.
The tour costs R150 per person, with a reduced rate for pensioners and students, and it suits beer enthusiasts and visitors who want to see how one of the country's oldest breweries works.
